The German word for uncanny is unheimlich, the opposite of heimlich (homely), or heimisch (native). The uncanny goes beyond mere unfamiliarity. It is when something previously mundane becomes horribly terrifying.

This gives me nightmares. One time, someone took me to a short play about a girl who wanted to fuck one of those dolls, but she wouldn't let the guy who operated it touch her with his hands. It was upsetting/funny.
